Drawings for the Festival of the Chinea. 1755-1782.

Preparatory sketches by Paolo Posi and Giuseppe Palazzi for the Roman festival known as the Festa della Chinea (the homage paid in the form of tribute money and a white horse - the "chinea" - to the papacy by the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies). The princes of the Roman family of Colonna held this Roman festival yearly between 1722-1788, on the eve and feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. The drawings are studies either for the "macchine" (elaborate architectural stage-sets to hold fireworks) erected for the event or for the prints issued to commemorate it.

12 drawings : pen and black and brown ink, gray wash, graphite, and black chalk ; 576 x 600 mm. and smaller.
